Separate the durable shift from the visual fashion.

The durable 2026 shift is not a look. It is a move from decorated pages toward adaptive evidence, useful interaction, expressive authorship and agent-legible structure. Visual fashion cycles as it always has; what lasts is anything that makes your evidence easier to reach, verify and act on. The half-life matrix below sorts eleven common trends into adopt, test, isolate and avoid.

Trend ratings are GA judgement, labelled inference. Every external claim names its source and date.

The shift

What is actually changing

For a decade, business websites competed on decoration: bigger heroes, heavier animation, more elaborate templates. Three forces are ending that era as a default.

First, AI summaries are absorbing casual browsing. When Pew Research Center measured click behaviour (22 July 2025), users clicked a traditional result in 8% of searches showing an AI summary, against 15% without. A visit you do earn is now more deliberate, and less tolerant of fluff.

Second, generated polish is abundant. Maggie Appleton’s essay “The Dark Forest and Generative AI” argues that as synthetic content floods the public web, first-hand human voice becomes the scarce, credible thing. A site that reads like everyone else’s now costs almost nothing to produce, and is trusted accordingly.

Third, machines are reading and beginning to act on pages. Google’s 2026 guidance for AI features keeps the same fundamentals — crawlable, clear, people-first content — and agent patterns are emerging behind that. Structure is becoming a first-class audience.

What that means in practice

Evidence that adapts to the visitor instead of one static boast. Interaction that produces something — an answer, a price range, a plan. Writing with a recognisable author and a date. And pages whose meaning survives being read by a machine.

The trend half-life matrix

Half-life is how long the trend is likely to stay useful on a typical NZ business site. The calls are GA judgement, reviewed quarterly.

Evidence modules with named sources and datesLongAdoptTrust and AI citation both reward verifiable claims; survives any redesign.
Agent-legible structure: semantic HTML, stable controlsLongAdoptGoogle’s AI guidance keeps the fundamentals; agents need the same clarity people do.
Useful interaction: checklists, estimators, configuratorsLongAdoptInteraction that produces something the visitor keeps earns its build cost.
Expressive authorship: first-hand, dated, opinionated writingMediumAdoptScarcity value rises as generated copy floods the web.
Motion as feedback and orientationMediumTestApple’s guidance: motion should support feedback, status and understanding, stay optional, and never make people wait.
AI assistants grounded in your own contentMediumTestWorks when sources, limits and escalation are shown; fails as an ungrounded chat toy.
Dark patterns rebranded as “personalisation”ShortAvoidErodes trust faster than it converts. GA will not build it.
Scroll-jacking and animation theatreShortIsolateKeep inside demonstrations such as Motion Worlds; never between a customer and an enquiry.
Generated content at scale, lightly editedShortAvoidReads as commodity and sits close to scaled-content abuse in Google’s spam policies.
Thin location pages spun up in bulkShortAvoidGoogle’s spam policies name the pattern: doorway abuse. Real jobs in real places instead.
The season’s template look (current hero style, current card style)SeasonalIsolateFine in the cheap brand layers; worthless as a reason to rebuild a sound site.

Method

How to judge a trend yourself

Three questions sort most trends without waiting for GA’s matrix:

  • Does it survive a redesign? If the value lives in content, structure or behaviour rather than styling, it carries over. If it is the styling, it does not.
  • Does it produce or present evidence? Anything that makes your claims easier to verify compounds in value. Anything that merely decorates depreciates.
  • Does it still work if the vendor disappears? Trends carried by one tool or platform die with it. Trends carried by HTML, text and honest behaviour do not.

The UK Government Digital Service design principles (updated 2 April 2025) remain the cleanest public statement of durable practice: start with needs, do less, design with data, build for accessibility. Fashion rarely survives contact with that list; structure always does.

The fashion tax

Rebuilding a website because it looks dated is the most expensive way to spend a marketing budget. If the structure is sound, fashion lives in the cheap layers: type, colour, imagery, spacing. Change those first. The redesign triage board separates repair from rebuild, symptom by symptom.

Evidence honesty

Sources, method and what would change this

  • Measured result

    AI summaries and click behaviour

Google users clicked a traditional result in 8% of searches with an AI summary versus 15% without; about 1% clicked a source link inside the summary itself (68,879 searches analysed).

Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025

  • Verified fact

    Motion guidance

Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines hold that motion should support feedback, status and understanding, remain optional, and never make people wait.

  • Verified fact

    Fundamentals over fashion

The UK Government Digital Service design principles — start with needs, do less, iterate — remain a maintained public standard for durable design practice.

  • Verified fact

    Generative content flood

Maggie Appleton’s essay argues that generated content makes the public web feel synthetic, pushing value toward first-hand voice. Cited as an argument, not a measurement.

  • Verified fact

    Doorway and scaled content policy

Google’s spam policies prohibit doorway abuse and scaled content abuse — bulk pages made to rank rather than to serve.

    What would change this conclusion

If the trends rated “adopt” stopped correlating with enquiry reliability in GA’s client work and public audits, the matrix would be revised and the change dated here.

Get a trend audit, not a trend report

GA reviews your current site against the durable shifts and tells you what to adopt, what to ignore and what to leave alone. Sometimes the honest answer is “nothing yet”.

The audit cites its sources. You can check every claim before spending anything.
